A revision of Anthoxanthum including Hierochloë (Gramineae) in Malesia and Thailand Naturalis
Schouten, Yolanda; Veldkamp, J.F..
A revision is given of the taxa in Malesia and Thailand usually included in Anthoxanthum L. and Hierochloë R. Br. (Gramineae). There are two species, A. horsfleldii (Bennett) Reeder with 7 varieties in Malesia and 1 in Thailand, and A. redolens (Vahl) Royen with 2 varieties in New Guinea. A survey of the characters generally employed to distinguish the genera is given and briefly discussed to show that these give an untenable separation. Some new combinations in Anthoxanthum are proposed.

A revision of the genus Dysolobium (Papilionaceae) and the transfer of subgenus Dolichovigna to Vigna Naturalis
Welzen, P.C. van; Hengst, S. den.
Dysolobium is a small legume genus, consisting of 4 species. It is closely related to Vigna, from which it differs by the shape of the wing petals and by the velvety, almost woody pods. Recently the genus has been divided into 2 subgenera, but in this paper the subgenus Dolichovigna is transferred back to Vigna. Possible relations between Dysolobium and genera as Vigna, Phaseolus, Canavalia, Dolichos, Psophocarpus, and Pueraria are discussed. Vigna seems to be the most closely related genus. Dysolobium is a Southeast Asian genus, two species of which are endemic and two more widespread; one of the latter ranges from India to Java (not extending more eastwards). The plants prefer a climate with a seasonal drought. Vigna pilosa is the only species in Vigna...

Dear,James P..
The 24 New World species of Chrysomyini are revised. Keys are given to genera and species with illustrations of characters of diagnostic and systematic importance. All taxa are fully described (except for the species of Chrysomya and Cochliomyia), and reference is made to their biology where is known. There are 20 endemic species (1 Chloroprocta, 3 Paralucilia, 6 Hemilucilia, 4 Cochliomyia, 6 Compsomyops), and 4 Chrysomya have been introduced from the Old World. Four new species are described: Paralucilia adesposta, P. xantogeneiates, Hermilucilia melusina, Compsomyops melloi. There are 2 new generic and 2 new specific synonymies. The types of previously described species have been examined wherever possible, and lectotypes designated where appropriate.

A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF A PILOT SURVEY OF SALT-AFFECTED DAIRY FARMS AgEcon
Alaouze, Chris M.; Read, Michael; Sturgess, Neil H..
A small stratified sample was drawn from irrigated dairy farms judged to exhibit two degrees (high and low) of salting in the soil. Cobb-Douglas production functions were fitted to time series and cross sectional data for each stratum. The results support the conclusion that the data from the two strata can be pooled and that the quality of the soil in this area can be modelled using an analysis of covariance approach. A preliminary confidence interval for the geometric mean of the ratio of the shadow price of water to the price of butterfat for farms in the sample was also calculated. This interval supports the hypothesis that rationed irrigation water is worth more to these farms than the price paid.

A STOCHASTIC PROGRAMMING ANALYSIS OF THE FARM LEVEL IMPLICATIONS OF SOIL EROSION CONTROL AgEcon
Segarra, Eduardo; Kramer, Randall A.; Taylor, Daniel B..
This paper analyzes the effects of uncertain soil loss in farm planning models. A disaggregated approach was used because of an interest in examining the impact of probabilistic soil loss constraints on farm level decision-making. A stochastic programming model was used to consider different levels of probability of soil loss. Traditional methods of analysis are shown to consistently overestimate net returns.

A structuralist approach in the study of evolution and classification Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A survey is given of structuralism as a method that can be applied in the study of evolution and classification. The results of a structuralist approach are illustrated by examples from the laws underlying numerical changes, from the laws underlying changes in the chelicerate life-cycle, and from the laws underlying the evolution of the chelicerate appendages. Suggestions are given for the study of the laws underlying the transformation of form, and some notes are made on structuring forces and the early stages of organic evolution. Some concluding remarks are finally made on deep structure, phylogenetic classification and evolution.

A STUDY OF THE SEASONAL PATTERNS IN THE ARGENTINE CATTLE MARKET AgEcon
Girado, Luis Martin.
Argentina has a long tradition as a beef producer country. Cattle in particular, have played a major role in the traditional environment as a source of food, employment and savings. Many of the typical symbols of this country are found within an environment of ranches, cowboys, horses and cattle, called in Spanish: Estancias Gauchos, Caballos and Ganado. The cattle sector not only represents a source of food, employment and savings to many people in Argentina, but is also a social symbol which the Argentines are proud of and identify with. Cattle can be sold at the ranch or at any city market. The selling and buying operations are performed through open auctions. If the animal is sold for fattening, the price is set per head. When it is going to...

A systematic revision of the North Eastern Atlantic shallow-water Haplosclerida (Porifera, Demospongiae), Part I: Introduction, Oceanapiidae and petrosiidae Naturalis
Weerdt, Walentina H. de.
The taxonomic history of the sponge order Haplosclerida is reviewed, with emphasis on literature concerning the Haplosclerida of the North Eastern Atlantic Ocean. The characters and their value for a phylogenetic classification are discussed. Two families are treated systematically: the Oceanapiidae, which have two representatives in the area, and the Petrosiidae, represented by one species. Emended diagnoses for the order, families, and genera are given.

A taxonomic revision of the genus Podocarpus Naturalis
Laubenfels, D.J. de.
In connection with the forthcoming revision of the Coniferae for the Flora Malesiana, the author thought it necessary to revise the genus Podocarpus. Although this genus has a substantial representation in Malesia (30 species), the revision is too involved to be appropriate with the Flora Malesiana per se. One new subgenus and 17 new sections are described, and 94 species are enumerated, of which 11 species and 1 variety are described as new, and 3 varieties have been raised to specific rank. Two keys are given to the 18 sections; each section has a key to the species.

A taxonomic revision of the western Palaearctic species of the subgenera Zimmermannia Hering and Ectoedemia Busck s.str. (Lepidoptera, Nepticulidae), with notes on their phylogeny Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van.
The subgenera Zimmermannia Hering and Ectoedemia s.str., together forming the genus Ectoedemia Busck sensu Wilkinson & Newton (1981) are described and redefined, and the Western Palaearctic species are revised. In total 50 species are recognised, including the new species hispanica, monemvasiae, nuristanica in Zimmermannia and andalusiae, algeriensis, leucothorax, alnifoliae, contorta and two unnamed species in Ectoedemia s.str. Fifteen new synonymies and ten new combinations are established and 42 lectotypes are designated. Primary types have been examined in many cases. Data on larvae and biology are included and keys to all species are provided. The monophyly and the sister group relationships of both subgenera are demonstrated. The subgenus...

A temperatura e o desenvolvimento larval de Chironomus sancticaroli (Diptera: Chironomidae) Zoologia
Strixino,Giovanni; Strixino,Susana Trivinho.
Development rate, survival and growth of a neotropical midge, Chironomus sancticaroli, were determined in laboratory at different temperatures. The "lower thermal limit" is 12ºC and the "thermal constant", characteristic for the species, varies from 140-144 day-degree. These results pointed out to a high development when compared with species of temperate areas and permit to expect, for C. sancticaroli, 16-18 generations/year, in natural conditions.

A TRANSLOG COST ANALYSIS OF TURKEY PRODUCTION IN THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION AgEcon
Grisley, William; Gitu, Kangethe W..
The production structure of 165-hen and 200-ton turkey flocks is investigated using a translog (dual) variable cost function. The partial static equilibrium elasticities of scale, input demand, input substitution, and cross price elasticities of demand are calculated. The elasticities of scale is found to be not significantly different from one over the range of 5,900 to 9,822 birds for the hen flocks and over the range of 7,765 to 11,043 birds for the tom flocks. In general, the input demand elasticities are inelastic with the exception of the input fuel. The cross-price elasticities are in general inelastic.

Abondance et distribution des larves d'araignée (Maia squinado Herbst) en Manche en 1983 ArchiMer
Martin, Jocelyne.
Zooplancton was sampled during 1983 on the french coast of English Channel, near Paluel (eastern Channel),near Flamanville (west coast of Cotentin) and in the bay of Saint-Malo. This paper. presents the results obtained about the larvae of the spinous spider crab (Maia squinado, Herbst).Seasonal cycles of abundance of zoeal ang megalopa stages are shown for all the stations studied in 1983. The distribution of zoeal stages is given for the two cruises which took place as zoea were most abundant. Previous results from Paluel and Flamanville are discussed to relate earlier hatchings with higher sea temperatures at the beginning of summer in 1983. NOT CONTROLLED OCR
